Before the early 1970s, vehicle owners had no way to make a distinction between incompetent and competent mechanics. Reacting to this necessity, the independent, non-profit National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was created in 1972.

ASE's purpose is to increase the quality of vehicle repair and service through the testing and certification of repair and service experts.

Electronics have altered the way cars are made these days, so vehicles that have been manufactured within the last two decades don’t have ignition points or carburetors. Back in the day, a tune-up mainly consisted of some basic adjustments to help the engine, and the replacement of important ignition system parts such as spark plugs and ignition points. This change has reduced the need for adjustments and replacements in many of the ignition and fuel system parts.
